The VirtualDR™ D2D2T appliance
integrates disk storage, tape automation, network connectivity,
and server-class processing with powerful replication and
file management software, encased in a single enclosure.
Included in this easy-to-deploy 4U-high, rack-mountable enclosure
is a six-slot Serial-ATA disk array, a 1x10 tape autoloader
available, in a choice of tape formats and capacities, and
a server motherboard with Fibre (FC) connectivity. This combination
brings together the best features of tape automation and
disk in a single, easy-to-use, high functional package.
The VirtualDR™ D2D2T Serial-ATA
disks and Fibre connectivity deliver affordable data rates
(up to 576GB/hr) for fast replication and virtually instant
file recovery. The tape storage offers low-cost, secure archiving
and removability not available with disk-only backup systems.
The single-box architecture also eliminates network impact
from the migration of data between disk and tape.
Each appliance ships pre-loaded with
software to manage the file replication from external clients
and file migration between disk and tape. It exceeds the
data rate capabilities of tape-only systems that typically
cost many times more, while providing a richer and more complete
range of functionality.
The VirtualDR™ D2D2T appliance
can backup a wide variety of servers. They connect natively
with a FC (Fibre Channel) interface.
GST’s D2D2T appliance is configured in three configurations:
. Incorporates LTO-3 technology - 1 x drive
and 10 cartridges with 8 x 400GB disk drives.
. Incorporates SAIT-1 technology - 1 x drive
and 10 cartridges with 8 x 400GB disk drives.
Native capacities are 500GB (1.3TB
compressed) with speeds of 108GB/hour (281GB/hour compressed).
A 4-generation roadmap provides for a native capacity of
4TB per cartridge (10.4TB compressed) and a transfer rate
of up to 864GB/hour (2.25TB/hour compressed).
This new sAIT tape technology platform
delivers high capacity and high performance using a half-inch,
single-reel tape and a 5.25-inch full-height mechanism design,
dramatically improving the value proposition between conventional
tape roadmaps and future hard disk drive capacity trends.
As a new class of tape solution, sAIT technology leapfrogs
conventional linear solutions, offering significant advantages
in capacity, performance, reliability, and scalability.
LTO tape technologies supported are LTO-2 and the newer LTO-3.
Native capacities for LTO-3 are 400GB (800GB compressed)
with speeds of 288GB/hour (576GB/hour compressed). A 4-generation
roadmap provides for a native capacity of 800GB per cartridge
(1.6TB compressed) and a transfer rate of up to 576GB/hour
(1,152GB/hour compressed).
Cartridges use linear (serpentine)
tape format providing fewer moving parts, durability and
reduced maintenance costs. The version of LTO technology
that GST uses is best suited for high-capacity backup, restore
and archiving. Enhancements in the areas of timing-based
servos, hardware data compression, optimized track layouts
and ECC error correction help improve capacities, performance
and reliability.
