GST Routers

GST’s routers connect up to seven servers to any GST tape backup solution with SCSI and Fibre Channel connections.

The Big Picture

  • Share subsystem or library among 7 servers.
  • Servers and tape device can be Fibre or SCSI; initiator or target.
  • 8 port router accommodates 7 servers routed to one tape device.
  • Full isolation and protection between backups
  • Management software for status, setup, diagnostics
  • Desktop or rackmount (3U vertical) enclosures
  • Plug and play auto configuration
  • Protect investment in legacy devices and router upgrades

GST’s Fibre & SCSI Routers are part of our SanMatrix™ family. They provide 4-port and 8-port routers that can be configured with any port as SCSI or Fibre Channel in either initiator or target mode. These intelligent routers provide the ability of a GST or other tape backup device (subsystem, autoloader or library) to be shared by multiple servers without conflict or contention. The necessary logic for resolving, managing and allocating resource requests is handled automatically. This provides an alternative to the expensive one-to-one deployment of tape backup devices to servers that is common today.

The user specifies whether each of the eight ports is a Fibre Channel port or a SCSI port. All generations of SCSI up through Ultra 160 are automatically sensed.

Both LVD SCSI with a maximum rate of 160 Megabytes a second and HVD SCSI at rates up to 40 Megabytes a second are supported.

It is available in a desktop enclosure, or in a standard rackmount enclosure with a 3U vertical dimension.

Model overview

GST’s Fibre & SCSI Routers are available in a wide variety of models. Each model provides the opportunity to select one of the following features:

1. 4 or 8 ports base units.
2. SCSI, or Fibre & SCSI.
3. LVD-SCSI or HVD-SCSI.
4. Fibre short wave or Fibre long wave.
5. Desktop or rackmount enclosure.

Benefits

Tape Resource Sharing. Supports non-overlapping backup operations for up to seven different servers that are routed to one tape subsystem or library. A good solution for High Availability configurations, to share a mirrored backup tape solution with the Primary and Secondary servers.

Plug and Play. Frequent testing with a wide variety of tape manufacturer solutions including ADIC, Exabyte, IBM, Overland Storage, Qualstar, Quantum, Sony and others; assures easy and automatic installation.

Management Software. Easy to use management application that allows users to setup and dynamically configure the router, run remote diagnoses and gain status information.

Protocol Conversion. Meets the need to convert SCSI-based storage devices to operate within a Fibre Channel network where necessary; reconfigurable later.

Future Growth. Fibre Channel is the accepted protocol for future network expansion on most medium sized servers. As time passes, accommodates the need to utilize existing storage devices with fibre networks.

Investment Protection. Routers permit use of older legacy devices with fibre networks, thus preserving the investment in older tape backup solutions. Moreover, the router can be upgraded to accommodate new protocols as devices change from HVD to LVD or SCSI to Fibre.

Features

LVD SCSI Support. Any can accommodate LVD/SE (Low Voltage Differential/Single Ended) SCSI; auto sensing detects Fast, Narrow, Wide, Ultra-wide, Ultra 2 and Ultra 160; maximum transfer rate is 160 Mbytes/sec. Same for HVD SCSI (40 Megabyes/sec.).

Fibre Channel Protocols. FC connectivity to point-to-point, arbitrated loop, or switched fabric topologies can be assigned to any port.

Fibre Channel Interface. Supports copper wire and optical fibre for distances up to 10 kilometers.

Status Information. Management software can locally or remotely provide information on server-to-target traffic, configuration (DIP switch settings), device ID, SCSI command execution, last 500 server commands and status, and test utility commands.

Operating System Tranparent. Router logic not affected by the operating systems in use.

Service and Support. A variety of support programs provide installation and onsite service; includes GST’s Accelerated Ship Program (GASP™) to get replacement units on the scene rapidly.

Warranty. Purchase price includes a built-in manufacturer’s warranty of three years.
