The Dual SLR Tape Subsystem is part
of GST’s SafeDR™ family. These tape subsystems
are housed in modular enclosures. SLR75 and SLR140 tape technologies
are widely used. The Dual SLR Tape Subsystem supports Mirrored
Backup, a function that generates identical sets of backup
cartridges so that one set can be safeguarded remotely for
disaster recovery while the other set is retained onsite for
faster restores; other tape functions add off-line copy and
cascading capabilities. An LCD panel provides an advanced
operator interface for visibility over the backup operation.
The Dual SLR Tape Subsystem can backup
a wide variety of servers. They connect natively with LVD
(low voltage differential), HVD (high voltage differential),
and FC (Fibre Channel) interfaces.
GST’s Dual SLR Tape Subsystem is available in a variety
of models. Each SLR technology (SLR75, SLR140) is available
in two server-to-SCSI Adapter interfaces.
. Maximum SCSI negotiation
of 160MB/s; the total server-to-storage peripheral connectivity
is 12 meters.
. Maximum SCSI negotiation
of 40MB/s; the total server-to-storage peripheral connectivity
is 25 meters.
SLR (Scalable Linear Recording) tape
technology has evolved through three generations to the popular
versions today: SLR75 and SLR140. Native capacities for SLR75
and SLR140 are 37GB and 70GB (75GB, 140GB compressed) with
speeds of 14GB/hour and 21GB/hour (28GB/hour, 43GB/hour compressed).
It has a 6-generation roadmap that provides for a native capacity
of 200GB per cartridge (400GB compressed) and a transfer rate
of up to 115GB/hour (230GB/hour compressed).
SLR technology provides high capacity
and performance, backward compatibility, reliability, scalability
and the use of existing media now and in the future. Data
is recorded in parallel on four tracks for SLR75 and SLR140.
Data placement ensures that it can be read during a restore
operation even if the media is degraded. The current generation
of SLR technology is characterized by large data buffers,
In-Line Compression feature and an Auto-Sense function that
optimizes tape speed.
– Mirrored backup capability produces simultaneous
sets of identical backup cartridges with no performance
penalty; this permits off-site storage of one set for better
disaster recovery and a second set for on-site storage for
rapid restore.
– Dual-drive configurations
ensure against drive failure since the second drive continues
to operate, ensuring the backup is completed successfully.
– For dual-drive subsystems,
key added tape functions include: dual-drive mirroring for
mirrored backups, off-line copying/verifying with no processor
penalty, and cascading to extend unattended backup capacity
by switching from one drive to the other (doubling capacity).
– The small dimensions and weight of
the modular configurations facilitate the optimum use of
datacenter space.
– Each SLR technology
is backward-read compatible to earlier generations, and
forward-read compatible with future generations.
– Modularity of design permits individual drives and
GST’s Dual Drive Controller to be easily replaced
in building-block fashion by the user.
– Individual modular enclosures
enable each drive and the mirrored backup controller to
be handled as separate building blocks; facilitates field
upgrade from single to dual drives.
– Multi-function LCD Display
Panel continuously displays key drive and backup job conditions.
– Manages mirroring, off-line copying,
cascading, and the LCD Display Panel.
– RS232 interface for updating
firmware and optimizing drive performance.
– A variety of support programs
provide installation and onsite service; includes GST’s
Accelerated Ship Program (GASP) to get replacement units
on the scene rapidly.
– Purchase price includes a built-in manufacturer’s
warranty of three years.
